As the name conveys, women’s artistic gymnastics is female only. Gymnasts often start very young, and begin to compete at the lowest levels at about age seven. Top artistic gymnasts must have many different attributes: strength, balance, flexibility, air sense and grace are some of the most important. They must also have psychological qualities such as the courage to attempt the difficult physical tasks, putting trust into their coach and to compete under intense pressure. The high standard of discipline and work ethic to practice a routine many times is essential.
Women compete in: Vault, Assymetric Bar, Balance Beam and Floor. The competition season runs from May to September culminating in the National GymSports Championships at the end of September. Only Level four and over gymnasts are able to qualify for Nationals after acheiving the set qualification scores throughout the year.
